VMWare Workstation 17.6 does not install

When I try to install or upgrade to version 17.6 I get the following message "An error occurred while applying security settings. Authenticated Users is not a valid user or group. This could be a problem with the package, or a problem connecting to a domain controller on the network. Check your network connection and click Retry, or Cancel to end the install."

From what I researched the problem occurs in versions of Windows that are not native in en-us, I use Windows in pt-br version

I tried to run the following command but it still didn't work

net localgroup /add "Authenticated Users"

I also have this ssue and while the adding of stuff in the config may help,

the system's managed by my company so I don't want to do that. 
I did test it on my own laptop without chaning stuff, works though.

Solution for German / Non English Windows Users - This works:

Open "cmd.exe" as Administrator.

type in:

net localgroup /add "Authenticated Users"

Then open C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Administrative Tools\Computer Management" (whatever it is in your language)
On the left hand side there will be "Users and Groups" (Or appropriate for your language):
Under "Groups" find the newly added entry "Authenticated Users" and add yourself and the user "Administrator" into this group.

Then VMWare Workstation Pro 17.6 installs normally.
Enjoy.

I also have a German Windows 11 23H2.

I did as described. In order to ensure creating the group in a proper way and with right syntax, I copied and pasted the net localgroup command into the elevated CMD.

Afterwards I added "myself" and the "Adminstrator" to that group as mentioned - and also re-logged-in (I re-started) into Windows in order to get the assignment between the new group and the users as also described in the user-to-group assotiation window. But the message about the rights still remains or re-appears. 

Seems not to work under all conditions. And yes I ensure that the TEMP folders are empty.

net localgroup /add "Authenticated Users"

then:
computer management > groups and users > add your user and the "Administrator" user to the newly created "Authenticated Users" Group.
Then install Workstation Pro 17.6 normally.

Tiago, I have the same problem using Windows Pro pt-br. 

VMWare Workstation Pro v17.6 fails to install with the same error message.
During the installation attempt, the previously VMWare 17.5.2 build-23775571 licensed version is uninstalled. Version 17.5.2 reinstalls normally, but not v17.6.

Hello guys. I was facing the same problem and doing some steps that I found about other type of software having the same error, solve my problem.

 1)Right-click on My Computer and select Manage.

2) Open the Local Users and Group tree.

3) Open the Groups folder and search for a profile named Users. If not found, right-click on the Groups folder and select New Group. Type in Users (case sensitive) as the New Group name and select Create.

4) Open the Groups folder and search for a profile named Administrators. If not found, right-click on the Groups folder and select New Group. Type in Administrators (case sensitive) as the New Group name and select Create.

5) Close the Computer Management window, restart the system and proceed with VMWare Workstation installation.

This happened to me, after several tests on several versions of Windows, I managed to install it on Windows 11 in English, and I'm posting here to try to help solve it, because apparently the problem is in Windows in Brazilian Portuguese.

Yes. Problem seems to be with localized versions of Windows. They use localized user groups' names so there's no "Users" group but "Usuarios" in spanish.

I suppose changing the way the group is addressed to SID instead of names could solve the issue.

I would advise to anyone who is creating "ad-hoc" user groups to just wait for the problem to be solved by devs.

Adding user groups without assigning proper privileges is a security risk, and needlessly adding duplicate groups with same privileges as existing ones is also a security risk.

You would all be better off just reverting to previous version and waiting. The problem is quite simple to diagnose and solve so I hope they'll release an updated installer soon enough.

I am a dutch person using the NL windows, Users = Gebruikers in our language. I got this solved by running following cmds as admin:

net localgroup /add "Authenticated Users"
net localgroup /add "Users

Then add Yourself and Administrator to these groups in Computer Management.

I would advise all of you to stop adding "dummy" user groups just for this purpose as they might pose a security risk unless you duplicate the "proper goups" permissions... thus having two groups serving the same purpose, which is another unnecesary risk.

I guess we'll need to wait for Broadcom/VMware to solve the issue and revert to previous version meanwhile.

Workaround to install 17.6 on non-english Windows 11:

The 17.6 install needs to manipulate/read the Users and Authenticated Users groups during the install. It will fail on non-english Windows' where they are called a local group name. (The install program should search on some other parameter that "display name"  ).

If needed, you can simply - in Computer Administration / Local Users and Groups - add two groups named "Users" and "Authenticated Users". They should have a single member each, "Godkendte Brugere" (this will expand to "NT AUTHORITY\Godkendte Brugere S-something). Of course, "Godkendte Brugere" should be replaced with your lacal language variety - it will be on the Groups list.

Microsoft does not offer the choice for installing Windows 11 in English when you buy a computer with their OS pre-installed in a non-English speaking country, even more if you subscribe to Microsoft 365. So, most non-native English speakers are stuck to use an OS in their native language. Upgrade your mind. ;)

For information, I'm in Windows 11 French, I created a 3 group:Users, Administrators,authenticated Users, restarted and the installation went well, Vmware seems to work and my vms start.

I then deleted the 3 groups (users, Administrators and Authenticated Users) then rebooted, when I launch the shortcut I get the message that Windows cannot launch this shortcut. I reverted to version 17.5, Broadcomyou need to review this installation package for other languages, creating the 3 groups and having to leave them can pose possible security problems and our DSI refuses the creation of these 3 groups

Thanks. Keep in mind that the users can change languages anytime, so it's not reliable to trust only one language. There must be some generic way to refer to "Authenticated Users" and "Users".

For my point of view it is necessary to work with group ID rather names.
Each locale has its own translation for "Users" etc.
It is the same as for folders. In each language the folder containing
pictures is shown in the explorer with the language specific name. As I am
German I prefer the German Language, and the folder is called "Bilder" in
the Explorer.
Using a tool like Total Commander or even the Coomand line CMD (or even
power shell) this folder is called "Pictures" - on every windows version
and localisation

Should be handled as well for the groups (i.e. the English "Users" are the
German "Benutzer".

to be honest, given the fact that 17.5.x works without this excercise, I would argue that 

• adding this group/user stuff may not be needed given the 17.5.x experiences so far
• people should immediately revert this, just adding this stuff. 
• company-provided windows installs can be compromised this way

(*) unless broadcom will have some kick **** additional thing we want to have or something other good reason.

Having said that, not sure if there will be another reaction soon. For instance, I am battling to get my licensing information available in my account that should have been converted from vmware's site.

The product works well but how the treatment is nowadays, is something different.

I am pretty sure these change will benefit several people.. I no longer have to run the software to get a decent performance from the virtual machine. Previously the virtual machine speed improved 200% when running as administrator.

They just need to use the well known SIDs for these groups instead of the group name.

following my ticket at Broadcom, and despite my insistence on not having to create groups in English, this is their response which does not satisfy me of course, I have the impression that Broadcom doesn't care at all, is unbearable given the price we pay for Vmware Worlstation (more than 100 licenses). 

I think we will abandon Broadcom and move to Hyper-v from now on

6. Close the Computer Management window, restart the system, and proceed with VMWare Workstation installation.
7. Navigate to the directory "C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware Workstation". If a popup appears to give permission, proceed to grant the required permission.

Hello fellow sufferers :/ I wanted to submit a case to support today, unfortunately this was not possible.... statement from support, sorry you can't submit a case...it seems we have technical problems. Support then opened a case for me...I should now receive a call in 2 hours...if something comes up, I'll get back to you...under no circumstances will I use the workaround! Before that I will go back to version 17.5...cheers

For those who really want to go to version 17.6, there is no other option than to use the quick and dirty way that Broadcom recommends and PB_vista has already mentioned. During the test installation, I also received 2 error messages in connection with shortcuts that could not be created. I had to add these manually, so nothing for a productive environment! Also no prospect of a fix!

quick and dirty:
net localgroup /add "Authenticated Users"
net localgroup /add "Users"

(net localgroup /add "Administrators")

grant the required permission on "C:\Program Files (x86) \VMware\VMware Workstation"

This is pathetic. Rather than reying on well-known SIDs of bulit-in groups (which are always the same, no matter what Windows nationalization is used), they took a simple approach and hardcoded English group names into the installer. So they added support for Windows Server 2025 and Windows 11 23H2 but removed support for non-english Windows versions on the other hand.

Sei que o topico deu bastante comentários, estou no momento instalado a versão 17.5.2 e não estou utilizando.

 

Já fez meses que estou utilizado o Hyper-v da Microsoft, tenho achado ele bem mais estável, o VM quando instalo um VM com Windows 10 fica travando demais, já observei que com as versões mais antigas funcionando muito mais rápido, 

 

Depois que a Broadcom comprou não estão nem ai para os usuários, nem a versão player que sempre foi free não consigo mais fazer download.

I know the topic gave a lot of comments, I currently have version 17.5.2 installed and I'm not using it.

 

I've been using Microsoft's Hyper-v for months now, I've found it much more stable, the VM when I install a VM with Windows 10 keeps crashing a lot, I've noticed that with older versions it works much faster, 

 

After Broadcom bought it, they don't care about the users, nor the player version, which was always free, I can no longer download.

 

Tip for everyone to use hyper-v, much more stable with everything

You can still download the player for free and now (after transferring to Broadcom) you can even download the workstation pro version for FREE as well. Obviously for personal use only, but that conditions always applied to the player version already.

If you are happy with Hyper-v, then be happy and use that.

I just joined this forum because a few people were telling me they couldn't install Vmware Workstation 17.6. It looks like there is a workaround but some people prefer to wait for an update to fix the problem instead. Personally I have had no problem installing Vmware Workstation Pro 17.6 on any of my computers. Will there be an update to v17.6 to fix the bug.

Kindly be aware that our engineering team has identified the issue as a bug, and we've already tested and fixed it in-house. 
The fix will be included in the upcoming release of VMware Workstation.

I feel Broadcom developers sticking their fingers in VMware code and creating this issue. I had been using their (Broadcom's) LSI RAID Windows management software (LSA) for some time and it had similar problem - administrative user's did not have perissions to manage RAID controllers. Just because they relied on textual group names (i.e. Administrators), not on well-known SIDs of built-in groups (which are constant). In order to make LSA work on non-English Windows, one had to edit LSA config files and change "Administrators" group name to localized name of this group. Broadcom refused to fix/change it since claiming the did not support non-English versions of Windows.

We also have the same problem with the latest version and for a package in Intune and ConfigMgr this is not a practical solution for us to create the groups locally and delete them afterwards. Yes we have "German" Windows 10/11 installation.

We very much hope that someone at Broadcoam will take care of this problem... but well, we are always checking for new versions...
