    Hi there,

I have an error when I'm trying to add new license into VCenter 4.1 - the license is correct (copy/paste way), but the error message is my result :

    License error: 5

    Diagnostic message:License file not found

If anyone know how to add new license code, please help me here...

you don't add license files into 4.x, they are all keys.  Are you trying to manage VI3 Hosts?  If a key, you have confirmed through your licensing portal, it is the correct key, and you are adding it in from Home--Licensing--Manage vSphere Licenses.

Yes, I did it there... and I have only 4.1 ESX servers in my environment (ESX and ESXi) All servers were updated from 4.0. VCenter also was update from 4.0 version... And I have only key string... that is why I can't understand why this problem happen.

So, how to add these keys? is it possible to add it via command line, in case VCenter GUI have trouble?

vsphere4 uses serial key and no longer needs license file/server anymore.

    check this out:

    http://www.vmware.com/support/licensing/vsphere_faqs.html

    and this part:

How do I upgrade the existing VMware Virtual Infrastructure 3 licenses to VMware vSphere 4?

As a VMware Virtual Infrastructure 3 customer with an active Support and Subscription (SnS) contract, you will automatically get VMware vSphere 4 licenses at product general availability. Visit the VMware vSphere Upgrade Centerfor more information about upgrading to VMware vSphere 4. Use the Licensing Troubleshooting Guide if you need help determining if you SnS contract is active.

No, my environment already was  at 4.0 version. I have used already the license keys like xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx and all work fine...

But now I have a trial license for View 4.5 and I can't enter them...

    this, is my problem.

But now I have a trial license for View 4.5 and I can't enter them...

You are trying to license View or ESX(i).  If View, you don't license your VIew  from vCenter, it's licensed from the View admininistrator

I have a  key with description - "VMware View Manager 4 with Composer and Offline Desktop for 100 VM's". Where I can set this license key? I thought, it can be set in VCenter license management tool...

That key needs to be licensed within View, not vCenter

    THANK YOU!!!!

one more question. Where I can set the licenses for VMware vShield Endpoint 1.0 and for VMware ThinApp 4.x Packager?

I can't do it neither in VCenter nor in Connection server

ThinApp comes with VMware View, I believe Premier, but I could be wrong. Log into your View Administrator and check your View Configuration, you should see ThinApp Configuration.  vShield is licensed as part of your ESX(i) licensed features.  Check the configuration tab of an ESX(i) Host, licensed features... If it's not there, then you don't have licensing for it.

Did you resolve this issue with adding Endpoint licenses? I have the same problem, works on one vcenter4.1U1  but not another Vcenter 4.1

    Hi,

I don't normally like to piggyback old threads, but I have the same issue.

vCenter 4.1 (no U1 as yet) and I cannot add Endpoint or CapacityIQ licenses to ours.

Diagnostic error seems to be rubbish as it displays all of the licenses I do have quite happily.

It must have worked in the past as we have added licenses okay.

    TIA Rob.

Sorry for very long reply, but my problem was solved when I enter  licance not inside VCenter but into View ( as it was suggested to me by Troy and Mauro

    Hi,

I have the same issue with Vcenter 5.0 and vshield for endpoints 5.0. I'm unable to add an vshield for endpoints license to the system. It comes with the message: License file not foud. ESXi and Vcenter are licensed properly.

any hints or tips? what am I overseeing?

I'm still struggling with this as well. Could it be related to eval licenses only? Is somebody having issues with licensing vshield as well?

We had similar problem with vShield 5 licenses that could not be added to vCenter 5. We isolated the problem to an older version of vShield Manager appliance OVA that was loaded. We have been involved with VMware vSphere 5 beta testing so I don't know if this vShield Manager was a pre GA appliance that we had running in this setup or after GA there was an update. In any case updating to the latest vShield Manager resolved our issues.

    Hope this helps you,

I've also seen this error when adding licenses to vCenter for various products (vCenter Operations Mgr, Infrastructure Navigator etc). VMware KB1000609 covers a similar circumstance with SRM but in general I think it occurs when you're trying to add a licence for a product which isn't installed yet. The products mentioned above are vApps - once you've deployed the vApp you're able to add the licence serial number without issues.
