  • 1.  SMTP settings

    I need to confngure SMTP settings so that mail messages can be sent using an SMTP IP address, a user account and a password, because my SMTP server does not allow user accounts without password.

    In my vSphere client I select "Home", "Administration", "vCenter server settings" and SMTP, but I can enter only the SMTP server IP address and the user name.

    Where can I set the password as well?

    Setting IP port and security settings (SSL and so on) would be even better.

    Unfortunately vCenter supports neither SMTP authentication nor SSL/STARTTLS at this point. This is confirmed by VMware in the following KB article:

    Support for SMTP authentication and STARTTLS in the vCenter Server and vCenter Server Appliance 5.x and 6.0 (2063147) | …

    As a workaround you could setup a simple SMTP forwarding server that takes the unauthenticated and unencrypted mails from vCenter and forwards them with authentication and encryption to you production mail server. If you run vCenter on Windows you could just install the builtin Windows SMTP service.

    In vCenter Server 6. there are advanced settings regarding mail credentials but this does not enable SMTP authentication according to this KB article, https://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1004070
