  • 1.  Alarm: Memory / CPU changed from Gray to Green after DRS vMotion

    Posted Mar 06, 2023 03:27 PM

    Hi everybody,

I have the following strange phenomenon in my environment.

    The environment:

    vCenter version: 7.0.3 (21290409)
    ESXi version: 7.0.3 (21313628)
    Cluster consisting of 16 Hosts
    EVC: disabled
    DRS: Fully automated (3)

    The phenomenon:

As soon as VMs are migrated I get the following alarms:
Description Type Date Time Task Target User Event Type ID
Alarm 'Virtual machine memory usage' changed from Gray to Green Information 03/04/2023, 5:53:53 AM VM vim.event.AlarmStatusChangedEvent
Alarm 'Virtual machine CPU usage' changed from Gray to Green Information 03/04/2023, 5:53:53 AM VM vim.event.AlarmStatusChangedEvent

Those alarms don't occur if VMs are migrated manually.
Also users have reported that the VMs, respectively the applications running on them, have problems.
This always seems to coincide with a DRS-initiated vMotion.
Of course this may be a coincidence, but that's how we became aware of the issue.

The only other thread regarding a comparable issue, was this one:
    Link

Any Ideas or did someone even encounter this too?

    Best regards

    ,

Are you facing this with all your ESXI on the cluster? If yes, could you please connect to any of them and get the /var/log/vmkernel.log to see if there are any issues?

Also, get the vmware.log of one of the VMs from the VM Folder on the Datastore it is residing.

    Hello GO_IT,

Did you find out the reason of this issue ? (We are facing a similar issue)

This issue would occur when the hostd of the ESXi was not able to communicate to the VMware Tools inside the guest OS.
We would need to validate the vmware.log for confirming.
