does anyone have any infos to compare the two CPU's?

    Hello.

You might find something on the VMmark results page.

    Good Luck!

Intel 8 Core, quad socket system (8 core, 16 thread per socket)

    77.29@51 tiles

AMD 12 core, quad socket system (12 core per socket)

    59.74@41 tiles

If you scaled up linear from 12 to 16 for AMD it would be 79.6@54.6 - so we'll see what Bulldozer does when it comes out. But of course, those will be16 true cores versus Intels 8 real cores + 8 "half" cores - we'll see what Intels 10 Core / 20 Thread does also then.

Ah, the never ending leap frogging in the CPU world...

    thanks Fred for the info.

for the current time Intel 8-core out performed AMD 12-core.

That is not true. It depends on the Application

1.) Fastest Single Thread CPU is the Westmere ( 6 Cores)

2.) Fastest Multithreaded Floating Point CPU is AMD Magny Cour

3.) Fastest Multithreaded Integer CPU > 6 Cores to 8 Cores is Intel Nehalem (In most Cases)

    4.) AMD is CHeaper

5.) Intel has some advanced features in reliability, but this INtel MCA features aren't used in VMware Version 4.1. Maybe in 5.0 in Sep 2011

You're breaking down comparing CPU to CPU when that wasn't what the comparison was, exactly.

As it stands, within the confines of VMMark scores, the Intel 8 core outperforms the AMD 12 core.

There are plenty of 100m dash olympic runners who can outperform the milers even over the course of a single lap, maybe even two - but the sprinter will fall behind the longer you push him because he's simply not capable of handling the endurance needs.

True, but even within the confines of the vmark scores the numbers you gave were not an apples to apples comparison.

You gave the top AMD score at 59.74@41 tiles which is a Dell R815 2U 4 socket server.

In an apples to apples world you would compare the R815 against Dell's Intel equivalent which is the R810 2U 4 socket server.

If you look at the score for the Intel R810 you see it is much closer at 59.21@41 tiles

To get the high end Intel score of 74.34@50 tiles with the Dell R910 4U 4 socket server, you would double the cost of the AMD R815.

This tells us that CPU is not everything and you have to take into account the full server configuration.

I'm sure if Dell built an AMD equivalent of the R910, that the vmark scores would be just as close as between the R810 and R815.
