  • 1.  Anyone using PAV enabled DASD with IDMS 16.0?

    Posted Jun 27, 2005 06:54 PM
    Hi,

I will make this appeal again just in case someone is trying this out
now. Does anyone on the list have experience with PAV enabled DASD
running IDMS 16.0? We are trying to get some hard numbers to see if this
    is worthwhile.

    Thanks

    One Final PAV Question
"Hopefully to finish this issue off until someone says they are doing it.
Does having PAV save CPU? I don't think that it could save I/O as it
just serves up the data faster to the system.

    Thanks

    resetting a terminal
    "Hi,

I'm hoping that someone has already written something for this. I'm
looking to setting up a task to which you pass the lterm name, and the
task varies the lterm off, the pterm off, the pterm back on, then the
    lterm on.

If you have something to do this, would you be willing to share it?

    "Two Options:
    1) ad hoc UCFBATCH/CULPRIT batch job to look for OUTSERV terminals and
    put them back INSRV
    2) Asynchronous Assembler routine to look for OUTSERV terminals and put
    them back INSRV

Let me know if you are interested in either one, and whether it is for
any terminal, or just for printers. . .

    "Thanks again Bob.

According to an IBM Systems Journal article a cache miss can be improved
by PAV. See what you think.

Re: Anyone using PAV enabled DASD with IDMS 16.0?
    "Chris ,

I don't think you would see any great benefit in CONNECT time which
indicates data transfer time (it is susceptible to poor dataset blocking
) nor DISCONNECT time which indicates a cache miss ( susceptible to data
access pattern and storage processor performance and configuration ) .
IOSQ indicates inter and intra dataset contention ( UCB wait -
operating system limitation since 1960s ) which is susceptible to data
access rate , dataset placement across logical DASD volumes and IDMS
Area to file mapping . Good luck .

    Chris ,

We are not doing this , but my advice is - check your IDMS DASD volume
performance with your z/OS sysprog , if the IOSQ component of the
service time is significant then you will greatly improve the service
time using dynamic PAVs ; IOSQ will be greatly reduced or eliminated .
If you don't suffer IOSQ time then you would not get any benefit .
