  • 1.  MSP - .mpp is locked for editing

    Good afternoon -

I tried working with CA Support, but was told that it's an MSP issue that they don't support, so I'm hoping to get some guidance from the user community.

One of my users is consistently having issues opening a project plan from Clarity in to Microsoft Project. When in Clarity, the project is not locked. After selecting the GO button assocaited with opening the project, it begins the process, then she receives the .mpp is locked for editing by ''. message and the project opens as Read Only. I did some poking around on the web and most of what I found talked about this issue as related to SharePoint. I've attached screenshots of the before screen, and the message itself. If anyone else has encountered this and has a solution, work-around or guidance, that would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

HI Mark. Does is occur only with the one project, or with all projects? If it's just the ony project, is it a problem with a corrupt .mpp file? Can you delete the local copy of the .mpp and try opening again from Clarity? If the problem occurs with all projects, it could be because the user does not have read/write access to the area where the local copy of the .mpp file is being stored.

Good morning - I've had a few different users report this issue on a handful of projects. I haven't tried deleting the local .mpp copy, and while I can do that, I've experienced issues with that in the past, namely with information that's kept differently in MSP than it is in Clarity, which requires a fair amount of clean up.

The main person I've been working with does have read/write access to the file, as they are sometimes able to access the file via MSP, but often (I believe they reported ~50% of the time) it locks up.

    Thanks!

AFAIK the "local" version (i.e. My Documents) that remains once the schedule is saved back to Clarity is just chaff. The mpp file is saved back to the Clarity Db, and is then re-created in the local filestore next time it is opened from the Db. There was a workshop at CA World about using Clarity with MSP. The presentation is here:

    http://www.ca.com/Files/SupportingPieces/caw2010-pp504ln_237601.pdf

If you have seen differences between the local and Clarity versions, it's because someone has updated the local version after save to Clarity, or because something has changed in Clarity (i.e. timesheets have been posted).

That said, I've seen in the past couple of days in my current organisation that if a user is working "offline" they will occasionally get an error saying the project can't be opened. It might be that your user is working offline, or maybe just needs to synchronise.

    Hi

Can you check in the prlock table for any internal lock on this project ?
Check with the internal id for the project.

If you do, clear off the lock, and then try to open the project again.

    Regards
    NJ

    Good morning NJ,

I have checked the prlock table and there is no lock. As a sanity check, wouldn't it show the project locked via the screenshot I provided if it were locked by Clarity? That was one of the first areas I explored and had no luck.

    Thanks!

    Good afternoon -

I had posted this question a few weeks back, but it wasn't worked through resolution, so I thought I'd check again to see if anyone has thoughts/recommendations.

    Thanks,
