vmnet1 and vmnet8 are typically only for bridged or NAT mode. Have you configured those settings within the virtual adapter to communicate with the host (laptop/workstation)?

If it is more the case that you have made those configuration settings and it's still not working, it could possibly be a network driver on your host machine. Most current network adapters and OS's support workstation vmnet configs via API, so also rule out if it is a (very) old host machine (I'm assuming that is not the case).
