  • 1.  Windows Guest VM's are taking between 3-5 minutes to shutdown

    Posted Mar 20, 2024 10:23 AM

I recently migrated from VMWare Workstation Pro 17 to 17.5. Since this migration, no matter what VM machine I shutdown, they take 4-5 minutes before they are completely shutdown.

    1. I tried reinstalling VMWare.
    2. I tried converting back VM's to 17.0
    3. I tried brand new VM's inside
    4. disabled the virtualization engine (Virtualize Intel VT-x/EPT or AMD-V/RVI) and (Virtualize IOMMU)

Same all the time. I am unsure what to do next...

    Windows 10 build 22H2
    Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-10850H CPU @ 2.70GHz 2.71 GHz
    32GB Ram

Hi  this was done (upgraded) and still the same thing. Even with newly created VM's after upgrading from 17.0 to 17.5, same result

    Where are the VM(s) stored?
Is it on the internal SSD or HDD? Or is it on external SSD/HDD? Have you checked the storage health?
Are the virtual disks of the VMs preallocated? Generally it is better to have preallocated as it is less likely to be spread across many different file slices.
During this 3-5 minute time period that the VM is shutting down is the storage access LED on the host (or external storage) indicating access?

    D'oh!

This HOST (my work laptop) operates on a M.2 drive. This was the same drive with 17.0 which I did not have that issue...

All my machines are not preallocated drives, but for a test, I created a new VM with a preallocated disk space of 60GB and the same occurs...

All VM's have the hardware compatibility to 17.5... I am wondering if I have to downgrade the software to 17.0 (Really not wanting to do this)

Today, I found out that 17.5.1 was available so I installed this version and problem is now resolved! I am guessing this could have been a known issue from VMWare...

    Thanks all for your suggestions.
