  • 1.  VMDK Missing After Snapshot Restore

    Posted Feb 13, 2024 03:33 PM

I am running VMWare Workstation Pro 17.5.0 build-22583795 on Windows 11 Host Machine.

I am using it for testing of software and making heavy use of the Snapshot revert feature.

Twice within the last month I had this occur:

File not found: Windows 11 x64-000002.vmdk

This file is required to power on this virtual machine. If this file was moved, specify the new location.

I had to rebuild the VM again after this as I didn't know how to remedy it.

However, I don't understand why this keeps happening over and over again. It will work fine, I try to revert to earlier snapshot and then the above file is missing and I can't revert of power on VM.

I suspect it's because I keep the VM on a 2TB Sandisk connected to USB-C port.

Anyone have any clue why this is occurring? How I can avoid it and how I can restore VM functionality?

I can't unfortunately tell you what's causing this.
However, it may be worth to do some troubleshooting once this happens.

The first thing I'm thinking of, is to check which file(s) is missing. The "Windows 11 x64-000002.vmdk" (as in the current case) may just be a small descriptor file, and one or more of the associated data "Windows 11 x64-000002-s0xx.vmdk" files may be missing.

    Hi,

have you looked on the datastore, where is the VM stored if there is the file or not?

Alfista - no Datastore on the hosted products like Workstation.

I leaned that you look on the storage where you have stored the VM if there are all files, but I see that you have it on external USB??

That's a very bad idea, you has luck that you was able to repair it this way, why you can so loose it all. Its needed that it run on internal disk.

    I appreciate the responses.

I suspecte the external USB is losing connection or going to sleep and the file isn't written/lost during this time. It's a guess because I have no other reason this would happen since other saw it when AV stepped in or similar.

I recovered the base image by copying another VMDK into the missing file slot. This allowed me to at least delete snapshots and recover the base image without needing to recreate the image.

I'd have to find some log or something to determine why this happens. The file was definitely missing.
