  • 1.  Fusion 13.5 / Windows 11 ARM / Notepadd app not working

    Posted Nov 10, 2023 06:57 AM

    Hi folks,

yesterday I wanted to try Fusion 13.5 and installed Windows 11 ARM through the integrated installer. I also paid attention to the fabulous Companion Guide posted here in the forums.

I am using a Macbook Pro M1 Apple Silicon. I installed the german image of Windows 11 ARM.

Everything went smooth and I could use W11 nearly without problems. But one strange thing occured: The notepad app (German: "Editor") does not work. The icon is there, but when I want to start the app, nothing happens. I did all the available updates, but nothing changed. I tried a repair and also a reset through the App-Configuration options of W11. No luck.

I further noticed that the Notepad App is listed as "0kb" size.

After that, I completely installed W11 a second time, no luck. I installed a third time, this time using the us-en version of W11, no luck.

Could anyone (who installed W11 ARM lately) maybe confirm this? Or does the app run normaly with all the other installations here?

    Maybe you have some advice?

One more thing: I installed W11 with a local account, no MS account used. Therefore no direct access to the MS App Store (for that, you need an account). That was also an idea to simply re-install the complete app.

Not sure if this is same for win11 in German, but have you tried the following: right-click on the Start menu > select Windows PowerShell (Admin) > paste this command and press Enter: Dism /Online /Add-Capability /CapabilityName:Microsoft.Windows.Notepad~~~~0.0.1.0

    Thanks!

I had to use a slightly different PS command to get it re-installed:

    Add-WindowsCapability -Online -Name Microsoft.Windows.Notepad.System~~~~0.0.1.0

PS says, that it was successfully installed.

But in the end, it didn't change anything. Notepad still can not be started. This is weird...All other Apps are running normally.

Whatever I do, I can't get the App to work. I have two theories:

    a)

The official ISO-image is broken. This seems unlikely, but who knows...Therefore again my question: Can anyone, who recently installed W11 ARM on Fusion 13.5, cross check this with his own installation?

    b)

This one is also unlikely, but...I am also running Parallels with another W11ARM-VM on my Sonoma-Mac. As Parallels had the edge over Fusion in the recent months, I switched over to Parallels. But with 13.5, Fusion has nearly closed the gap again.

Maybe the Parallels-W11-VM (or the Parallels hypervisor App itself) interfere with the Fusion-W11-VM, which is causing the Notepad-App not to run properly?

I'm running a US English language Windows 11 ARM VM. No problems with Notepad here:

I rather think this is a Microsoft issue rather than anything to do with Fusion. I'm going to download the German ISO and see if I can reproduce.

One thought here given what you've said. Microsoft does not include some of the "default" apps in the image. They will be auto-downloaded from the Microsoft Store either after installation or at first launch. I've seen where for at least 1 non-English language, Microsoft did not include the Microsoft Store in the ISO image. No Store, no download.

Check to see if you have the Microsoft Store app in your VM. If not, open a command prompt as administrator, then run

    wsreset.exe -i

and wait for the Microsoft Store to install (you can track progress through Windows notification.

Then go to the Store and see if there is an update/installation of Microsoft Notepad available.

Well, I was able to build a German Windows 11 ARM Professional VM from the ISO downloaded with the Microsoft tool.

I haven't installed updates yet, but in the base install of 22621.1702, Notepad/Editor is working. It did seem like the Microsoft Store had not installed, so I did run wsreset -i. Not sure if that had an impact or not, but that's what I did.

I'm going to attempt to apply updates and see what I find.

Updates applied and the VM was running on 23H2. Notepad/Editor still works.

Suspect what you're seeing is related to the Microsoft Store. Make sure it's installed and see if you can verify it's installed or get an update to "Windows Notepad" through it.

YES! , you are my hero of the day!

The Store did the trick. Indeed it was completely missing in my installation. Installed it and then installed Notepad through the Store App. Everything back to normal now!

    Thanks again!
