    Hello all!

Im happy to join this community!

I have a question that I know people here can answer so here it goes.

Im upgrading my host at home and have ordered a i7-2600S.

The delivery times is horrible and I'm thinking about canceling and order a Xenon E3-1260L instead.

I know that the Xenon is a server processor and that I "should" have that but what is the real difference between them?

I'm limited by a student budget so trying to keep low there.

The question is, what is different accept the memory capability and the speed?

    check this for comparison: http://ark.intel.com/compare/52215,52275

I have already build the rig, mobo and memmory is:

    Asus P8B WS, Kiingston 4*KVR1333D3N9/4G non-ECC.

Acourding to what I have figured out so far is that the board and memory is capabel of handeling a Xenon, but is it woth the slower speed and why?

More or less both has same feature, speed and support.

Refer below link for the comparsion between both the processor,

    http://www.cpu-world.com/info/Intel/processor-number.html

But what has to be checke is which processor is supported for ESXI5 installation or which processor is VMware supported out this 2. You need to check in hardware compatability matrix in vmware website.

    http://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/search.php

I didnt find i7-2600 is mentioned as supported in VMware HCL.But E3-1200 series is supported refer below.

    http://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/detail.php?scat=cpu_series&cpuseriesid=61&deviceCategory=server&partner=46&releases=76&cpuSeries=61&page=1&display_interval=10&sortColumn=Partner&sortOrder=Asc

The Xeon (not Xenon) CPUs usually have more L2 cache than the desktop class CPUs, and are certified to run in multi-CPU arrangements.
