  • 1.  WindowsXP: restarts hang at "Windows is Shutting Down" on VMs

    HI there!

We are running an ESX 4.0.0, 164409 and have problems with our virtual Windows XP SP3 (with latest Updates).

After installing automatic Updates from our internal Wsus Server the guests try to make the automatic restart (not all at the same time)

but they hang at "Windows is Shutting Down"...

If this problem occurs i had to log into our vSphere client - open the console and klick one time into it... after that the vm restarts!!!

The Problem is ... we're using these vm's for a few mobile users... and there aren't allways admins in our office so we had to find a solution...

    any ideas? ?:|

I have the exact same issue. My VDI environment contains VMs running windows XP service pack 3 on ESX 3.5. When i reboot VMs from my connection broker or from the Vsphere client they hang at "Windows is shutting Down". Once i navigate to the VM and open the console the VM appears to be hung-once i click into the console the reboot goes through.

This is a major issue in the environment because after maintenance reboots VMs must be manually checked to ensure the reboot was completed. In anyone has found the fix please Help!!!

We are also having this issue, but we are using VMware ESX 4.1.  We also have Windows XP SP3 desktops that I will open the console on and have them just "restart" the moment I open the console, but just before they do I see "Windows is Shutting Down" and they just reboot!

    Very scary!

Has anyone ever found a solution for this problem?!?

I'm having this poblem quite often still.....

We have about 30 clients with an ESXI solution and encounter this problem more often than we'd like.

ESXI4.0 and 4.1 with an XP-pro-sp3 as the "Administrator console and backup controller".

    Hope to hear from anyone...

    Richard.

    Hi there,

not sure if anyone still has this issue....

we were able to solve the issue with the following settings

    • disable the screensaver
    • disable all power saving options
    • Edit the group policy...
      • gpedit.msc
      • DISABLE \Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\Security Options\Interactive logon: Do not require CTRL+ALT+DEL
      • ADD SYSTEM to \Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\User Rights Assignment\SHUTDOWN

    That's everything

    best regards,

Old thread, but I do still have a Windows XP SP3 x86 VM running some vertical app, and I was having the same problem as described in this thread ( which is also describe in this other thread: https://communities.vmware.com/t5/ESXi-Discussions/XP-VM-Hangs-During-Unattended-Shutdown/td-p/2082767 ).

The solution given by user "toc" in the message above has solved the problem, I am glad to report.

    So thank you, toc!
