    Hi,

Sorry if this thread is the wrong place, but my problem is that I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 VM that has been working fine for about 6 months and in the past 6 weeks or so, after applying an update from Microsoft it is stuck in an endless reboot loop. The VM will load and Windows begins loading and pops up with Windows Module Installer and then after around 2 seconds goes to the next screen of Preparing to configure Windows, then it crashes and reboots and will keep doing this over and over again.

I have tried googling this and the only answers I can get is tapping f8 at the beginning and going through the repair your computer option and eventually loading the command prompt and removing pending.xml from c:\windows\winsxs, but this hasnt solved anything. Does anyone have ideas as I'm pulling my hair out over this!

If anyone knows how to stop the windows module installer from running in the first place then I could copy all the data from it and create a new VM.

    Thanks

Well, this isn't going to help the reboot process...

But you could mount the existing (problematic) VM's vmdk to another VM if you want to copy the data off.

Did you have any luck fixing this? I'm having the exact same problem with my installation of WS08 R2, except it isn't a VM.

Happened in exactly the same way. Overnight an update must have applied itself and automatically rebooted, and ever since it has been in the same endless reboot loop. The server isn't backed up and has no data on it, but has software I really need that I don't have the installation key for, so I really need to boot into this system.

Am really interesed in any fixes that may work for this. When I try running SFC frrom the repair console I get the message:

"There is a system repair pending which requires reboot to complete. Restart Windows and run sfc again."

If I can remove this pending update I may be in business. Any ideas?
