  • 1.  Will ESXi run on SHUTTLE SH370R8?

    Hi,

I'm considering buying a Shuttle to setup a nice home project with a couple of VM's within ESXi.

I've configured the following setup and I'm wondering if this is compatibel with ESXi and if it  run out of the box and will be sufficient to run at least 8 VM's without any issues:

    • Case / Barebone: Shuttle XPC cube SH370R8
    • PSU: Intergrated
    • Mobo: Integrated - Intel H370 Express chipset
    • CPU: Intel Core i7-8700 Boxed
    • CPU Fan: Noctua NH-L9i Bruin
    • RAM: 64 GB - DDR4 @ 2.666 MT/s (4 x Kingston ValueRAM KVR26N19D8/16)
    • M.2: Samsung 970 Evo Plus 250GB
    • SSD: Samsung 860 EVO 4TB

For now I think I'll run the following servers to start with:

    • Firewall
    • Linux Server
    • Windows Server
    • Docker environment
    • Testserver
    • Plex
    • NAS

Can you please advise if this is the way to go or if there are any improvements to make with this setup?

    Kind regards,

    Perry

    Google helps:

    https://www.ivobeerens.nl/2019/06/04/using-the-shuttle-sh370r8-as-home-lab-server-with-vmware-esxi/

I would check the disk controller and NICs were supported in case something changed in the hardware spec, here’s the tool:

    https://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/search.php?deviceCategory=io

As for whether it will run your 8 VMs, you need to know what resources each of them would consume - CPU, memory, disk space, and IO - it’s not as simple as saying yes for 8 VMs, or of those specific types of VMs...

    Hi Scott,

Thanks for your reply, very much appreciated!

I did found the article from Ivo Beerens and I must say, it looks very promising . I can't find what kind of disk controller or mobo is used within the Shuttle, that makes it a little bit of a guess. I do have the chipset so that helps a little bit.

Let's say it will work, I'd like to think positive

The reason I asked if the setup would be good enough for the VM's I described, is because I hoped that their would be some kind of best practice that says that you need at least x resources for 1 Linux/Windows VM to function properly. That way I could have a idea about what I need to run those environments.

I guess it's not that easy, I'll see if I can make the estimate a little bit more precise so it's easier to calculate the total resources I need.

    Again..thanks so far!

    Cheers

You’ll have to do more research on the OSes and workloads you want to run.

I understand, I'll see if I can make some of a calculation on what I need.
