  • 1.  Why are my vmware VMs so slow?

Ok, so this isn't business related.  I'm just a geek dad.  I like VMs, and recently I decided to buy a Dell Poweredge R620 server off of eBay.  I Ibought a VMWare ESXi 6.5 license and installed it.

I have 3 different VMs that I have setup.  I guess my license only allows me 4 cores per VM.  I have assigned 4 to each of these VMs.  I upgraded the memory from 64 GB to 192 GB for the server.  I have alloted 32 GB per VM.

I would've thought it would be pretty speedy running Windows 10 Pro on it when they're pretty bare OS with specific functions.  But, man are they slow.  Granted I have 4 900 GB 10k drives in it setup in a raid 5 but they're spining disks.  Not sure if I can upgrade to SSD and how much it would help.  (I say not sure if I can upgrade it because I'm sure there's a compatibility chart stating which drives are compatible with the server.

With the CPU, it's not uncommon for me to go to task manager and the CPU is at 100% and it's "Interupts" that's using all of the CPU usage.  Not sure what that is.  I know IRQs back from the day and I'm sure IRQs are still used today... but, not sure how to figure out which app is interrupting constantly to get it to stop.

The vms are painfully slow.  Is there anything I can do to speed them up, or am I just trying to polish a turd?

Have you enabled in BIOS CPU hyperthreading option?

How many CPU cores does each socket have, and how many sockets does your system have?

Each processor has 6 cores.  My vmware console shows I have 24 processors, so hyperthreading is enabled.

    Hello.
The first thing would be to update the Frimwar of the server, especially those of the disk controller and those of the disks.
You should also apply the latest patch level of this version.
I attach a link to VMware patches.
