  • 1.  Which Vmware ESXi is best for my infrastructure

    Posted Jan 17, 2012 12:50 PM

I am having 6 HP DL Servers. I have created 20 VMs on 3 of my servers. This VMs work as database servers, another 3 physical server work as an application server (Terminal Server) where all the user login and work remotely. Currently, I am using VMWare workstation for virtualizing.

Now I need DR and high availability features, hence I am looking forward to Vmware ESXi, but I am not able to decide which all VMware licenses should I have to fulfil my requirement.

It will all depend on how many of the  HP servers you plan to ude for your environment and at what level of DR you are looking for?  VMware offers bundled kits for the SMB marketplace - you can read descritptions here - http://www.vmware.com/products/vsphere/small-business/overview.html

If you are planning only to use three of the servers for your environment and rely on vmware HA and backups for DR I would look at vSphere Essentials Plus

If you are planning to use all the servers or looking at a more robust DR solution like SRM then you will need to consider one of tyhe Acceleration Kits -

I would get in touch with a VMware partner or VMware to get pricing and reommendations -

My objective is to consolidate my 6 HP DL servers with VMware VSphere as Datacenter cluster. Then I will create my three application servers and all other 20 database servers from the cluster.

I need to use vCenter for managing my servers. I additionally need vMotion and DR functionality.

Please let me know which SAN storeage will be best for me. 10 TB will be enough.

Note : Three of my servers are with dual processors, and three of them are with single processor. All of my six server have 32 GB RAM.

    Hi there,

I would suggest you have a look at the VMware vSphere Licensing so that you can compare among all of them. If you need high availably you need VMware HA . Also you would need a separate licence for vCenter Server

I agree with everyone here at the post.  You need to answer a lot of internal questions:

    1. How many hosts will I have over the next 12 months
    2. How many VMs will I have over the next 12 months - this is very important especially with Version 5 License... will explain below.
    3. What will the VMs be doing - performance wise. This leads back to the first two questions.

If you can get close to answering these.. granted it can be very hard, you will be ahead of the curve for your request.  All your hosts should be ESXi, dont even think of getting ESX 4.0.  Also Licensing from Version 4 to Version 5 has changed.  While version 4 licenses are still availible, you will want to plan for version 5.  The key is Virtual Memory.  Make sure your licenses from VMWare will support all of the VMs you are planning to install should/when you move to version 5.  Before with version 4 it was all about the Hosts configuration, now that is no longer the case.

VMWare has a number of partners that will work with many different size clients.  Contact a VMWare SMB Rep and they will point you in the right direction of a partner.

    Thanks

It all depend upon your budget, application availability future expansion .

so first do one meeting with operation and understand future business dependancy then only took your own decission.
