  • 1.  Which hypervisor version for IBM x3550 M3

    Hi,

    by luck I got hold of a IBM x3550 M3 server. Now I wanted to install ESXi 4.1 - but this version is no longer available. And I could not find in the plethora of data an information, if the actual Hypervisor 7 is compatible with this older machine.

    Does anyone know?

    Looking at this link it doesn't seem to me that it can be supported.

    The latest version appears to be ESXi 5.5.

    What you can try to do is an install and see if it gives you errors.

    From my point of view I would never put into production a server with a version of ESXi that is not certified by either the vendor or VMware for compatibility.

    If, on the other hand, we are talking about a Test or laboratory environment, I would try to install 7 or 6.7 or 6.5

    Great - thank you. Will try it. The system will anyway not be used in a commercial production environment, so a little playing around until it fits would be ok.

    But I suppose the IBM version should work - will let all of you know.

    Hi Enrique,

    well, download and installation was seamless. BTW the Version ESXi 7 did not work in this type of server. After installation I was directed to the local manage page - and there is a link "Download Vsphere Client" to get he management console/tool. Unfortunately this link is not working - the download starts, but then an error message comes up, that the file could not be read .... Also the "Downloads" for "Adminstrator" lead only to a discussion page....

    But anyway, will work on this and - as I wrote - so far it worked.....

    i have vsphere esxi 6.7u3 with the last patches working with ibm x3650m3!

    7.0x is not compatible!

    Yes, I can also confirm that ESXi v6.7U3 worked on my x3550 M3 systems. ESXi 7.0x did not. It gets to the point where it needs select a disk to install the ESXi OS on but there are no available disks. It is obviously not seeing the RAID controller. = (
