  • 1.  What VM Version Should I choose?

    Posted Oct 02, 2010 10:33 PM

    I am creating new VMs on our ESX server (vSphere 4) but noticed that there are two versions 4 and 7 ..

    So I am wondering which one should I use for the following OS and How to decide?;

    1. Windows XP 32x and 64x

    2. Windows 2000 32x

    3. Windows 2003 Server 32x and 64x

    4. Windows 2008 Enterprise Server 32x and 64x

    5. Linux RedHat ES 4 and 5 32x and 64xx

    Provided that the ESX servers are running HP Blade 490 and HP DL380 servers

    Please advise and if there is any document and links I can read to help in this matter?!

    THANKS N ADVANCE

    Hello,

    Unless your virtual machines also have to be able to run under VMware ESX 3.x all of your VM's mentioned down here should be best served by using Virtual Hardware version 7. Virtual Hardware 7 will gives you the most flexibility and is also the current virtual hardware version on the hosted products (such as VMware Workstation / VMware Fusion)

    There's one other reason for selecting version 4 hardware and that's having a very old guest operating system. So maybe the guest OS Windows 2000 and guest OS RHEL 4.x might be better served by using version 4 hardware. But both should be OK with v7.

    As simplicity is king in almost any environment, my recommendation is to use version 7 for all guests.

    Hope this helps,
