  • 1.  What permission to assign to user

    Posted Jan 09, 2012 11:47 AM

    Hello all!

We are currently using vsphere Client 4.1 and have 12 hosts on ESX 4.1

We have two new starts that require access to a virtual machine in vsphere Client. I have been tasked with assigning them the permissions to access it.

When I click on the VM and on the permissions tab I can see everyone who has right on it.

What right do I need to assign them so that when they log into vsphere Client they only see the VM I let them see and not the rest of them.

I have added the user to Virtual Machine User (sample) and even Admin but when they log in they still see all of our servers instead of just the one.

Any help as always is greatly appreciated,

    Austin.

    Hi,

You must have applied the permissions on the vCenter Cluster level instead give the permissions to the 2 users on the particular ESXi host only - click on the permissions tab and select the two users.

Check out the permissions tab and view the colum called Defined in as this will give you idea as to where the permission is provided example cluster level, vcenter server level

It is very important to identify where you are providing the permissions - if you select the cluster than the permissions are propogated to all the ESXi hosts within that cluster.

    Hope this information is useful

    Hi,

I highlighted the Server on the left pane and selected the permissions tab along the top. I have double checked the permissions that he will have with "Virtual Machine UserI(sample)" and it is right but when he logs into vSphere client he can see a full list of everything.

I also assigned him permissions on the Host the VM is on and still the same result.

    HI,

    Login into the vSphere client

Home --> Host and Clusters --> vCenterserver --> permission --> Add permission as NoAccess role to the user (to whom you want access only VM's not servers) then select the VM --> permission --> Add permission --> Select the role which you want then add the user.

    Hope this will help you

    Thanks
