What is the DISCOVERED VIRTUAL MACHINE folder which shows up under VMs and Templates?

I am doing a P2V of 10 servers. And 4 RANDOMLY get stored under the DISCOVERED VIRTUAL MACHINE folder. This folder is a system generated folder and these servers seem to be randomly placed in there. I cannot find a logic behind it.

The reason why it causes problems for me is because I am doing a BACKUP to TAPE of these VMs and trying to automate this.

However, if the P2V servers RANDOMLY get into the discovered folder, then it becomes difficult.

I deleted the discovered folder, did the P2V, and it still went into the folder!

please explain the reason for this folder... it should either put ALL servers into this folder or none.. not just some of it.

    AHHHHH!!!!! helppppppppppppppppp :smileysad:

as you stated, this is a coded into the vCenter software and is the default folder created under Virtual Machines and Templates. If no other folder is chosen as a "home/destination" for your guests, this is where they get placed.

You can however create any other folder and make drag and drop guests into the newly created folders.

The problem is I scheduled P2Vs to occur at later dates, then I back up to tape using scheduler also. It is automated.

But if some servers go into the discovered folder and some don't, then the backup to tapes fail...

I rather set it so EVERTHING goes into the discovered folder or nothing goes...

when using p2v converter, I don't see an option to p2v into the discovered folder.. I can only p2v into a resource pool.

you are using the standalone converter? Or the vCenter plugin? The standalone in step 3 allows you to choose "destination attributes", there you can define what folder the guest goes into.

I don't use the plugin, so I can't comment on that. You may want to peck around your scheduled task and see if anywhere in there is the option to place the guest into a certain folder. I know you can do this with the standalone version.

so you're saying this is a converter issue, and not something which can be turned OFF on ESX or Vcenter?
