I am coming from windows backgroup and would like to learn about the vmware products as now these are the mandotary requirement for sys admin.

What I understand about the these product,

VMWware Workstation is like microsft virtual PC or Hyper-V. If i compare it with hyper-v, vmw is similar product which can be installed and run from windows/linux desktop os.

ESXI - also looks like hyper-v, but does not require OS to run on top of it.

Vsphere - dont know that does it do.

I also want to know similar produtcs offered by other venders (like citrix etc)

The reason I am asking is, in most of the job adv. they ask for VMWARE, but does not mentioned which product. What commond product used in IT industry?

Workstation is for desktop virtualization.  Installs on Windows or Linux and allows you create virtual machines on your PC/Desktop.  VMware Fusion does the same thing for Mac OS.

ESXi is a bare metal hypervisor and like you pointed out has many benefits over Hyper-V as it doesn't require a host OS.  ESXi is small (~150MB), easy to install, patch and update.

vCenter provides centralized management for ESXi hosts.

ESXi and vCenter are packaged together as vSphere.  vSphere is sold in different editions - e.g. vSphere Essentials, vSphere Enterprise, vSphere Entrprise +.

There is also a free verison of ESXi referred to as the "vSphere Hypervisor".  The free version is the same hypervisor as in the vSphere editions, but has some limitations tied to it.

    Hope this helps.
