  • 1.  VSphere HA Cluster failure when downing VCenter Server

    Posted Jul 11, 2009 09:22 PM

Today I took down my VCenter server for maintenance. A short time later, my 2 node VSphere HA Cluster went offline as well as all running guests. When I brought the VCenter Server back up, both HA hosts had to reinstall the HA Agent then power on the guest VMs.

In the logs, I saw this entry for each host. For host XYZ.domain.com running guests example1 and example2:

Host XYZ.domain.com in (datacenter) is not responding

example1 on host XYZ.domain.com in (datacenter) is disconnected

example2 on host XYZ.domain.com in (datacenter) is disconnected

The other cluster node has a similar log, where it said itself is not responding and all the running VMs on it say they are disconnected.

Any ideas why this would happen?

    Where is your DNS placed?

Ah ha. Primary DNS server was down as well. Secondary should have been up, but I cannot verify that at this time.

It could very well have been the issue. Is there a way I can make host table entries on ESXi to prevent a DNS outage from taking down the cluster?

Secondary DNS seems to be working, but the Seconday DNS server is one of the VMs that ended up getting powered off in the event, so it went through a reboot. No way to tell what state it was in at the time.

Alt-F1 in server console, type 'unsupported' and standard way, /etc/hosts
