  • 1.  vSphere and iSCSI QNAP connections error

    Posted Apr 02, 2014 02:06 PM

    Hi all,

I've a big problem with my vSphere free license and  ISCSI connection:

vSphere A --> iSCSI connection to QNAP (network card 3) with cross-cable and IP 169.254.100.103

vSphere B --> iSCSI connection to QNAP (network card 4) with cross-cable and IP 169.254.100.104

On QNAP both network cards have the protocol iSCSI enabled and the vSphere A its connected to QNAP store (network card 3)

If I connect the vSphere B to QNAP with network card 4, vSphere A lost the QNAP store and log this:

"Device or filesystem with identifier naa.6e843b6fd3840d2d1276d4263dae13dd has entered the
All Paths Down Timeout state after being in the All Paths Down state for 140 seconds. I/Os will
    now be fast failed.
    warning"

    "esx1

iSCSI discovery to 169.254.100.103 on vmhba37 failed. The iSCSI Initiator could not establish a
network connection to the discovery address.
    error"

Someone has an idea why it happens?

    Thanks

    QNAP TS-470

My vmware license does not include HA and FT, could be that the problem?

The Box QNAP TS-470 is not supported , that could be the reason for your issues.

From the qnap site about TS-470: "Supports VMware®, Citrix®, and Microsoft® Hyper-V® and advanced virtualization features".

    iSCSI (IP SAN)

iSCSI Target with Multi-LUNs per Target (Up to 256 Targets/LUNs Combined)

    Supports LUN Mapping & Masking

    Online LUN Capacity Expansion

    Supports SPC-3 Persistent Reservation

    Supports MPIO & MC/S

iSCSI LUN Backup, One-time Snapshot, and Restore

iSCSI Connection and Management by QNAP

    I'm confused :smileyconfused:

Can you check this link, just to have another look from you.

    Thanks for your reply.

There are discrepancies between the qnap site and the vmware compatibility list. I will open a ticket to QNAP support.

Make sure your iSCSI port groups are correctly configured and the binding is valid. I have a video here that walks through the process.

    Chris, thanks for the video.

My Host A is correctly configured and find the iSCSI target and lun.

The problem is host B, which with the same configurations, mount the LUN, but excludes them from host A

vSphere A --> iSCSI connector configurated  (OR) vSphere B --> iSCSI connector configurated --> LUN OK

vSphere A --> iSCSI connector configurated  (AND) vSphere B --> iSCSI connector configurated --> LUN DOWN on vSphere A

vSphere B --> iSCSI connector configurated  (AND) vSphere A --> iSCSI connector configurated --> LUN DOWN on vSphere B

My vSphere version is VMware vSphere Hypervisor (ESXi), free version; I do not know if this version enables two hosts to share the same iSCSI target with the same LUN.

Can anyone give me some additional information?

    Thanks
