  • 1.  vSphere and APC UPS over Serial Cable

    Hi All,

I am looking for the best way to do a safe shutdown of my VM's and hosts utilizing an older APC SmartUPS 3000 over a Serial cable. I was wondering if anyone had any pointers on how to get this to work.

I have tried using the Powerchute Business edition to shutdown, but it appears that you have to have all your servers hooked up to the UPS over a serial cable in order for it to shut down properly. The PCNS doesnt work cause I do not have a network card in my UPS (nor do i think this older unit can have a network card installed).

has anyone properly configured their systems in such a manner?

    Thanks!

    No direct experience with this...

Can the APC UPS software kick off a script from a host with a serial port?

The actions could then be scripted usng vsphere powershell CLI

There are several solutions: use vMA (and there are several threads about this), use PowerChute for ESX (never tested) or use apcupsd (see on www.apcupsd.org and download the RHEL 5.2 x64 version).

Whit apcupsd you can connect a serial line to a single ESX, and connect the second as a apcupsd slave (example are both on site and in configuration file).
