I agree, the vCert tool for me is the cert swiss army knife for VMWare.
Having said that, my practice is to do a shutdown and take a snapshot first before using.
It's a great tool but if you try an option you don't understand, you may find yourself in worse shape.
Never hurts to be cautious.

Since you mentioned certificates being expired and now the services aren't starting I am guessing there are others expired as well. I would think possibly the solution user certs , but could also be the trust anchor.
