  • 1.  VMware vSphere 8 CPU compatibility

    We recently upgraded the vSphere ESXi version to 8.0U1 and got the below warning during it.

    "The CPU in this host may not be supported in future ESXi releases"

    Does that mean the CPU might not be supported in the future releases of vSphere 8 such as ESXi 8.0U2 and U3 or is it only for the major releases such as ESXi 9 and 10?

    The server is Dell PE R730 and CPU is Intel Xeon E5-2650-v4 Series

    I'm running ESXi 8 on an R720 w/ the same CPU, and got the same warning. I think it is referring to the next major release (9). But not 100% sure...

    The CPU-series is at the bottom of the cut-off list for CPU support, but for the current major it is still supported so it is very likely that you will not have to worry for 8.0 U1/U2/U3 and so on. If there were to be an 8.5/8.7/9x+ versions then it is very likely that the CPU would fall out of support. 

    Current support statement from VMware for the Intel Xeon E5-2600-v4 Series: VMware Compatibility Guide - CPU 

    The hardware architecture for the Xeon E5 2650-v4 is "Broadwell EP"; starting vSphere 8 VMware has already added other "family-members" of the "Broadwell"-family to the Intel CPU Discontinuation List for that release. As "Broadwell-DT" and "Broadwell-H" are already dropped support-wise it is probable that "Broadwell EP" will follow in the next release.
