    Posted Oct 25, 2010 04:45 PM

I just upgraded my hosts from ESX 4.0 to ESXi 4.1. I guess it was more of a reinstall than an upgrade. After the upgrade I did a VMWare Tools upgrade on all of my virtual machines. A few of them didn't seem to take the New tools quite right and I had to manually update mouse and video drivers on them.

Another thing I started seeing is that VDR is unable to take a snapshot and back up a couple of my VM's. I have removed and reinstalled Tools on these VM's a couple of times. I looked that the build number on the about tab of the VMWare Tools applet and on these VM's (and a couple of other that can take a snapshot) the version and build number is v 8.3.2, build 257589 and on all of the others, it is version 4.0.0 build 261974. All of these VM's are Server 2008 R2 64 bit.

I think Tools is what is causing my problem, but even if it's not it sure would make me feel better if it installed the same on all of my VM's.

If I choose to upgrade the ones that are version 4.0.0, it makes them the 8.3.2 version, so maybe the 4.0.0 VM's got missed when I upgraded the Tools. Is 8.3.2 the version I should be seeing?

I've checked two Windows Server 2008 R2 VM's I have running and the tools version is 8.3.2 build-257589. My host is running ESXi 4.1, VUM is reporting that there are no patches that need to be applied/installed, so it's current...

Have you made sure that you have the correct updates from Microsoft (for the guest OS) installed? You could have something on the problem VM's that's the root of the issue here...

Thanks for your reply. Looks like I have the right version of tools installed.

I had run windows update, butI guess there were still some updates to the updates and some updates to the updates updates left to install, as always. I did that and then reinstalled Tools and still have the same issue. Here are some of the error messages and windows events...

The Create Virtual Machine Snapshot task fails with status:

Have you tried with the disk quiescing option disabled on the VM's that have issues? I've had to do that with different VM's using different B&R solutions when I get pretty much the same error message. There are times when you want quiescing enabled, and others when you need it disabled (weather you want it on or not).

The VMware Snapshot Provider is the problem. Reviewing and implementing the fixes in the current version of the following VMware KB does not resolve the issue. They may fix it soon when they see this.

Cannot create a quiesced snapshot because the snapshot operation exceeded the time limit for holding off I/O in the frozen virtual machine

    http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1018194

Use this method if you are getting the following error in the system event log when trying to start the VMware Snapshot Provider Service in the guest VM:

Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion VMWare Snapshot Provider

Also, you will probably be getting the following error when trying to take a snapshot of the VM with Memory unchecked and Quiesce checked or when trying to do a VDR backup:

Cannot create a quiesced snapshot because the snapshot operation exceeded the time limit for holding off I/O in the frozen virtual machine.

To fix the problem Uninstall and Reinstall VMWare Snapshot Provider as follows:

    1. Uninstall Volume Shadow Copy Service (using Modify from VMware Tools setup)

    2. Delete VSS folder from C:\Program Files\VMWare\VMWare Tools\Drivers

    3. Delete VMWare Snapshot Provider Service by deleting the key HKLM\System\Current Control Set\Services\vmvss (Just delete the vmvss key)

    4. Delete VMware Snapshot Provider {564d7761-7265-2056-5353-2050726f7669} from HKLM\system\current control set\services\VSS\Providers

(If you do not have this key, just omit this step.)

    5. Reboot

    6. Start the two COM+ services mentioned in kb.vmware.com/kb/1018194

    7. Install Volume Shadow Copy Service (using Modify from VMWare Tools setup.exe)

    8. Reboot

VMWare Snapshot Provider should now be Manual, and you can start it.You should now be able to take a snapshot and back up with vdr while the VM is powered on.

This is now resolved with ESX / ESXi 4.1 update 1

Make sure you upgrade Tools on the guest OS (inventory will say that Tools status is "OK" but you will still have to upgrade in the guest).

    Enjoy!
