  • 1.  VMware snapshot without memory

    Hello to all,

    I have been using VMware products for years but never thought about the following question when taking snapshots until one client brought it up.

    - When you take a snapshot without memory of a running VM is like hard shutdown (power cord taken out if you will) after the VM is powered back on?

    What I am trying to say here is how the VM treats this snapshot because on a normal shut down, the OS sends a signal to stop the services and the processes, but when doing a snapshot without memory this signal is not involved anymore. Again, the VM in up and running when taking the snapshot.

    Yes, that's essentially correct. Taking a snapshot of a VM without its memory state and then reverting to that snapshot is known as "crash consistency." In other words, it's basically as if the VM "crashed" and resumed at that point after being started up.
