I need some clarification on the pricing & limits of free & paid versions of VMware vSphere.

For free vsphere, this link (VMware vSphere Hypervisor Requirements for Free Virtualization )says Max number of physical CPUs per host is unlimited

Comparing it with this table (Compare VMware vSphere Kits for Virtualization) why are there some limits on the number of Processors ??

Its looks strange for me for the free version to have unlimited CPU while the paid version have limits on the Processors :smileyconfused:

    Thanks.

The free edition has no limits on processor sockets, but it is limited to 32GB of physical memory. So there's actually no need to limit the processors.

The question is, would you purchase an expensive host with multiple processors, but only be able to run a limited number of VMs due to the memory limit?

    ok.got it.thanks.

Confirm me that on this link Compare VMware vSphere Kits for Virtualization ,

VMWARE is using the word "Processor" to mean a socket which can have a number of cores.

Correct, for example this one: "6 Processors - scalable with additional licenses"

You can have 3 servers with 2 processors each or 6 servers with 1 processor each or any combination of the two.

    thx Linjo.

Is 1 processor == 1 socket ? confirm me this.

Well yes, a socket is where the processor goes. You don't need a license for an empty socket...
