  • 1.  VMware Player - import XP mode

    Hi everybody,

We're using XP mode for an old application. Due to poor performance of MS Viirtual PC I'd like to give a try to VMware player. However when I click on Import Windows XP moce VM in the File menu of Player I got a pop-up asking to click OK to install Converter. Upon doing that there was an error message that it cannot be done due to error. So I grabbed it from internet and manually installed. Unfortunately the error message, while different, is still there saying: The "VMware vCenter Converter Standalone" product is not configured properly for use with VMware Player. Uninstall VMware vCenter Converter Standalone and try again.

Any idea here? Reinstall did not help. Any suggestions appreciated.

It's depends of what version of VMPlayer  you use. However you can simply install latest standalone Converter 5.0 and convert your machine using Converter Client.

    Hi,

in fact I have the latest versions of both - I even tried to fire up converter and look for the XPM VM but id does not recognize that as a VM.

Standalone Converter 5.0 do not need any other product to work, try it.

    Honza,

I ran into the same issue trying to import the XP Mode VPC (vmware converter not configured). I ended up making it work by doing the following:

    Run VMWare VCenter Converter Standalone,

Choose Convert Machine button in upper left corner

Select Type: Backup Image or Third-Party Virtual Machine

Browse to the location of the vmc file (in Windows 7 path to my file was C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Virtual PC\Virtual Machines)

Configure Destination System settings (Destination Type: VMWare Workstation or other VMWare virtual machine, Select Vmware Product: Vmware Player 4.0.x, Choose name of VM and choose path to new VM)

Once the conversion process was complete I opened VMPlayer and chose Open Virtual Machine and pointed to the new VMX file in the path configured in the conversion process.

Power on VM and ready to go.

    Hope this helps,

    Tyke
