  • 1.  VM stops responding on the network

I know this is an old VM, but I have a 2003 server that just stopped responding on the network today. If I reboot the server, I can ping it from the time it starts booting until just before the login screen pops up, but then it stops responding again.

Here are the things I have done.

    1. I reinstalled the VMware tools.

    2. I uninstalled AV software

    3. I made sure the windows firewall was turned off.

    4. I tried removing the NIC and adding a new one.

    5. I moved the VM to a server with a known working network connection.

    6. I gave it a static IP. Still can't ping the default gateway.

    7. I recreated the VM using only the vdmk file to make sure it wasn't a VM setting.

Still no luck. If I restart it will have network for a few seconds (meaning I can ping it for a short time during boot). Then nothing. Any help would be appreciated.

I am running ESXi 6.0 running hardware version 6.

What does the network situation look like from within the VM.  Does the NIC appear to be attached to the network?  Can you ping anything else besides default gateway?  can you ping the loopback address?  What do hardware devices look like?  Is it all reporting fine or is there a problem with hardware/driver?  What driver is being used?  What if you remove the hardware and reboot to let it auto detect and reinstall?  What version of VMware Tools is installed?  What kind of NIC is being presented to the VM?

    Hi,

Please specify which network adapter you were using while adding a nic into virtual machine.

Is it E1000, vmxnet or vmxnet3

Try uninstall the vmware tools and see if you are able to add the network driver and if its shows E1000. or add the NIC with E1000 driver and then test the connectivity.
