    Can you be more specific?

Do you want to achieve a checklist for vm decommision like:

    Remove DNS records

    Remove from AD domain

    Remove from monitoring

    Etc..

Is that wat you're looking for?

    Hi Rick,

I want to jolt down all the steps involved in properly decommissioning a VM.

That would largely depend on your environment. As above, plus additional steps perhaps, such as removal from SCCM, backup software etc.

Can you help me identify all the steps in sequence?

As ChrisFD2 and RickVerstegen wrote: everything depends on your environment. If it is only vSphere, then you should shutdown VM and delete it. But then there are such steps like:

    • Disjoin from domain
    • Remove from DNS
    • Remove from backup tool
    • Remove from monitoring tool
    • Remove from automation tool (SCCM, Baldelogic, etc.)
    • Remove from CMDB
    • Remove from AV server
    • etc.

Everything depends what you have in your enviroment.

How is deleting a VM from disk any different than getting rid of a physical box?

And does the VM really need to be "deleted"?

Why not just power it off, and see what happens?
