  • 1.  vLCM Single Image on cluster with no DRS

    Posted Oct 22, 2024 06:24 AM

    Hi All,

As Baselines are being deprecated, i have setup a new cluster with the vLCM Single Image.

The hosts are ESXi Standard so there is no DRS capability. vCenter is a VM in this 8.0.1 Cluster.

When selecting the Cluster > Updates > Image > Remediate All. There is only this option to 'Remediate all'. When selecting it tries to call DRS to evacuate host, etc but obviously fails as no DRS enabled.

    Whats the solution for this?

Seems you have to do some of this manually such as:

    • vMotion VMs from one host
    • Enter that host into maintenance mode
    • Then select "Remediate All" then once its remediated that host, rebooted it will then try to call DRS again
    • At that stage exit first host from maintenance mode
    • vMotion VMs from 2nd host to first host
    • Enter 2nd host into maintenance mode
    • Go back to Cluster > Updates > Image > to see if it then moves on to remediate the 2nd host
    • if its timed out then select Cluster > Updates > Image > Remediate All
    • Then once its remediated that host, rebooted, manually exit from maintenance mode and vMotion to rebalance compute

I support this kind of environment for my customer, where DRS is not in use.
There's no "magic workaround" - the steps are more or less similar to those you provided.

The only difference is that I don't use the "Remediate All" option. Instead, I select a specific host that was manually placed in Maintenance Mode and use the "Remediate" option for that particular host.
