    Good morning!!

Happy Belated Easter to those who celebrate it!!

I hope you guys can help me with my question this morning..

I'd like to create a small virtual network, that in no possible way, will conflict or even be SEEN

by the main domain in the company, but uses the same internet connection?

    Set up now:

    SBS2003-01 (non-vm) w/ ISA for firewall

    vSphere 4

VM Network1 - Access to main network

    VM Network2- no internet access

SBS2003-01 (vm image conversion, not up)

    SBS2011-01

    etc,

    etc,

Is there a way to allow the vSphere to get internet access without conflicting the main network?

    Thanks in advance =)

You can create a deficated VLAN and use a virtual appliance as a gateway (if you do no want to reconfigure your ISA to handle also this network).

    Hey andre! Good morning!!

    Thanks for the advice!

I'm still rather new to the whole VM world (and I love my visit so far- maybe I'll move everything to this world!)

Can you point me in the right direction on how to go about making a vlan & using a virtual appliance as a gateway?

What you would need to do is create a Virtual Switch with no External vmnics , then create another switch with one of the uplinks on the host.

You woudl then create a VM with 2 network cards ( one in each switch ) and install a router appliance on it , something like pfsence or untangle or vyatta , which would isolate your hosts form each other.

What are you trying to achieve at the end game ?

It would be dificult to send you to a specific spot to give you all the directions specific to your situation. Here is a link to information regarding Virtual Networking http://www.vmware.com/technical-resources/virtual-networking/index.html

For a Gateway device You would need to create two vSwitches and use a virtual router to bridge the two. There are many virtual routers available pre built or available to install as a VM.. Pfsense, monowall, vyatta and you can also search the VMware appliance marketplace.

I would go through the information in networking and work out what you need. Add questions to this thread as you build your understanding.

    Thanks again =)

Sooo just to update the thread,

I can NOT figure out how to make an uplink (google is leaving me even more confused!)

Can anyone help point me to the right direction?

As the picture above shows, I'd like for it to use the same internet connection as the existing network, but to have a different IP set so the networks can NOT talk to eachother...

Thanks in advance, and happy thursday!!!
