  • 1.  Virtual Machine Multiple VLANs

    Hello Folks,

I just want to clarify something about ESX VLAN which I'm not familiar with. Here is the scenario:

We have 11 ESX nodes (Blade server) clustered and going to have virtual machines with multiple VLAN. For the same they asked requirements from ESX side. Following are the points I have given for requirements:

    1. Trunk port should be configured in both blade server/physical switch uplink

    2. VLAN for ESX/VC IP subnet should also be created and should able communicate with all other VLANs

These are the two things I mentioned. Is there anything I missed out? or something I must include?

    Thanks

    Hari.

    2) is not necessary as long as it is reachable from the management network (or from the network in which you would want to manage)

then from the trunked port you will need to create virtual switch for each of the VLAN and you need to define the VLAN number during the wizard. thats all.

blade-center you need to pass the same setting as your core switch in the trunk of the external ports of the switch blade where the uplink. And in the internal doors you agree to the VLANs that VMware will use on each slide, if more than one, use the trunk.

thank you for your response... If trunk has been enabled in both blade server switch and in physical, all physical VLAN should be listed (auto-discovery) when I'm creating port group is it? or I have to configured all VLAN manually?

in vswitch propierties you need add new PORT GROUP and set a VLAN ID.

    Example: Portgroup 1 - Production - VLAN ID 10

    Portgroup 2 - Backup - VLAN ID 20

all in same vswitch or in differ.

To certify that all vlans is ready to work you can check in vswitch > proprieties > network adapter .symbol +

best practice would be each portgroup = one VLAN. this would allow the rightful portgroup to be assigned to the rightful virtual machine.

this would be a good tutorial: http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1003825

    hi..

I have created only one VLAN per port group... Is there anything needs to be done from VMware side? coz we chkd the connectivity but failed..
