  • 1.  Virtual ethernet card 'Network adapter 1' is not supported

    Posted Nov 03, 2010 08:04 PM

We are running an HA cluster with 6 hosts. When I attempt to migrate our vMA vm to any of the other 5 hosts I get the following message:

"Virtual ethernet card 'Network adapter 1' is not supported. This is not a limitation of the host in general, but of the virtual machine's configured guest OS on the selected host"

I am still able to select the Next button to migrate the vm but will this break something? We're using the vMA solely for running APC PNCS at this point. The vMA is using the VMXNET adapter and the vm was created using the downloadable .ovf file so we did not choose VMXNET.

    Thanks for the help.

    Hi there,

Not sure what the OS is for your vMA but a couple of things you could try:

    - shutdown the vMA and if the option is available, right-click and select Upgrade Hardware

    - shutdown the VM and then remove the current adapter and re-adding another.

It may be that the vMA was created with an older version of ESX and specified the VMXNET adapter whereas the new version of ESX has branded this as Flexible.

Make a clone/backup of the vMA before doing this if it has important stuff on it.

    Kind regards.

ThompsG, I'm not sure which version exactly but our vMA is Linux, which we downloaded here:

    http://www.vmware.com/support/developer/vima/vima40/vma40relnotes.html#about

I'm not sure if the vm was created with an older version of ESX but we created the server using the "deploying from URL" method and we got the .ovf file from the link above.

golddiggie, yes all VM traffic port groups are named the same, we can migrate others vms around without this message it's just with this vm. I'm thinking it has something to do with it being a vSphere Management Assistant (vMA), or like ThompsG says something wierd with the NIC.

Have you tried to download the vMA again from http://downloads.vmware.com/d/info/datacenter_downloads/vmware_vsphere_4/4#drivers_tools and redeploying the appliance? I would try that and see if you get the same experience.

Try downloading the vMA and then pulling it into your environment (link already provided by another)... I used that method to add the vMA to my environment. I actually use that method when using any virtual appliance since it ensures that everything is local before you go ahead with the deployment... You could have had something happen during the deployment from URL task that caused the issue you're having...

Thanks everyone I followed ThompsG 's advice and removed the NIC and readded another VMXNET 3 which fixed the issue.

Are the VM traffic port groups (shows as "Virtual Machine Port Group" in the host Networking configuration tab) named the same across all the hosts in the cluster??? Make sure the VM port group that's selected for the VM is present on all the hosts too...
