  • 1.  vCenter Web Client Mouse Issues

    Posted May 26, 2015 02:29 PM

I just upgraded to vCenter 6 and am trying to use the web client, however I'm running into one minor issue and one major issue and wanted to see if anyone had any ideas.

Minor Issue: The mouse will not work in the web console until the tools are installed. This is in Windows under both IE, Chrome, and FireFox. This seems silly to me as I need to install the tools with the fat client before I can use the web console.

Major Issue: Via the web console, I cannot click anything on the taskbar/start menu of a Windows VM. It's almost like the mouse alignment is too high, as when I right-click on the taskbar I get the context menu further up the screen like I clicked the desktop. To the best of my knowledge this started happening after I changed the resolution on the VM. I changed it back, but the behavior hasn't gone away.

    Any ideas?

This is a known issue in virtual machine usage. if they are using under mac os X or they dont have vmtools installed . no resolution till now. Vmware KB below.

VMware KB:    Unable to use mouse cursor within a virtual machine console through the vSphere Web Client on Mac OS X

Try to fix it via updating the drivers for your mouse and pointing device.

    1. Log in to the virtual machine.
    2. Right-click My Computer and select Manage.
    3. Select Device Manager and expand Mice and other pointing devices.
    4. The VMware driver is named VMware Pointing Device. If another driver is present, update the driver:
      1. Right-click the mouse driver and click Update Driver Software.
      2. Browse to the C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Tools\Drivers\mouse and click Next.
      3. Select VMware Pointing Device and click Next.

I did see that KB about OSX, however this is just a normal Windows 7 workstation. Mouse works fine when the tools are installed, does not work when I initially build out a VM before I actually install the tools.

I actually re-installed the tools on the VM, the bottom taskbar is still not clickable. The only thing I can think of is that the bottom of the VM has scrolled off the screen (vertical scrollbar) and maybe that has something to do with it. The virtual machine is running at 1024x768, which should easily fit inside my browser window, but maybe some scaling is going on? Not sure how to get that window back to size so it fits.

    Okay, got a little further.

Everything works fine when my browser window is not maximized or when the console view is not switched to full screen mode.

Regardless, I'd love to figure out why that doesn't work, and also change the size of that desktop so I don't have to scroll down to get to the taskbar.

Thats nice that you got it fixed. its a well know issue with the webclient with its irrelative behaviour.

Yes correct. The vmware tools necessary to be install for getting the best performance. Also stated in KB that weird behaviour is possible if you didnt get the vmware tools deployed on it.

    Hi,

I using Firefox and have the same issue,  I find it very annoying too, on 5.5 version console worked fin but on 6 it started to mess. I find some work around - it proves zooming issue. When you just start web console, you can press CTRL++ or CRTL-- and get windows zoomed in or out (actualy it

works contrary to expected), when zoom out the view, you can hit bottom start menu again. If u forget to zoom out and click on console, then must close console and reopen it to able zoom out. It is very annoying. Hope somebody can resolve that in the Vmware, or no body gona use web console any more.

This 'fix' of minimising the web window worked for me too.

This was working using v6...it was only when I upgraded to update 6.0.1 that it started to mess up. I would also echo sentiments about the web client - I HATE IT!!! It's slow, clunky, stuff doesn't always open...in short, I would like to see it killed. It's awful. Please get rid of it. Thanks.

This has worked for me as well. Does anyone know of a better fix? Maybe a browser setting? I am very surprised more people aren't reporting this! :-/

    Chrome for me.

I've started a similar thread few months back: vSphere 6 Web Client - VM console mouse issues

The issue is still present. The best workarounds I have found:

    - resize the console window so that the size of it is "equal or smaller than native resolution configured on guest"

    - use VMRC Download VMware vSphere
