  • 1.  UPtime or availablility of a platform and of a server

    I would like to monitor the uptime for a platform (like linux box) ,but DONT quite understand how uptime works. How do I monitor a "platform "for uptime . If I use the agent and show its uptime ,that may NOT be the same as the uptime for a platform if for some reason the agent didnt start.

    In the same frame of mind I would like to monitor the uptime as a % for a web site. What is the best way to do this ?? What metric should I monitor ??? again if the agent goes down and does NOT start up is the UPTIME % for the web site going to be affected and show more down time if the agent is NOT running .. It seems everything depends for accuracy on the agent running .


    Also:

    1, HOw long is data saved for monitoring uptime or
    web access . Is it configurable ?? \
    How do I know how much disk space I have left or room in the internal postsql datbase ?? Where do I look for this ??

    The HQ server considers an agent not starting as the platform being
    unavailable. The unavailability of a platform is determined by the
    fact that an agent does not report available for it. Therefore,
    what's important is the HQ server be running without interruption to
    ensure that our "backfiller" process fills in the missing available
    data points as unavailable to give you an accurate accounting of the
    percentage of time that a platform is available.

    To monitor the availability of a website, you can set up an HTTP
    Platform Service by manually creating a new Platform Service for any
    platform in your infrastructure. The HTTP service has an
    availability metric already, so there's not too much to it. It does
    depend in the proper functioning of the HQ agent to collect
    availability, and would be considered unavailable if the agent was
    not running.

    the availability of a platform will show as DOWN . Which would be the case if the platformw as up but the client on it down.

    One more big question :
    HOW long is data saved by the hyperic server ??
    Is this configurable ???
    HOw do I check space in the database or disk hyp[eric server is using ??

    If the client (agent) was down, then the server will consider the platform as being down.

    It's a little bit tricky to answer your question regarding how long the data is being kept. We compress the data and store avg/min/max over windows into different tables, each is set for different window size and range. Overall, the oldest data in HQ will be purged after 1 year. This is configurable in the database.

    You can check the space by monitoring the database used by HQ :-).
