  • 1.  Upgrading Linux VMs with Update Manager

    Posted Nov 24, 2009 07:17 PM

We have just started testing vSphere and are upgrading the VMtools and hardware to version 7. It has been successful on the Windows servers, however it fails immediately on the Linux servers with the following error "remediation of linux vms is not supported". Is it possible to do this without Update Manager or is there a workaround? We have a mix of Red Hat 5 and Fedora servers.

    Thanks,

    Scott

Yeah if you manage your Linux environments via the redhat central update (requires yearly subscription). Otherwise no.

I have to subscribe to a Red Hat service to upgrade VMware Tools and to hardware version 7??? That doesn't seem to make any sense.

You said "remediate" that implies that you want to PATCH Linux VM's, not simply upgrade the hardware.

That part is easy. Power off the VM, right click, upgrade VM version. Boot VM. Click VM -> guest -> install / upgrade VM tools, this will mount the CD.

Use the console to double-click the CD, run the vmtools RPM. It SHOULD prompt with upgrade, or install as new. Once it's installed, lauch terminal session for the redhat.

    type:

vmtools (hit tab), it should autocomplete, vmtools-upgrade.. something like that. run that command. A bunch of stuff will go by on the screen, just hit enter (to accept ALL defaults) (or answer y/n as appropriate). The highlighted, pre-selected option will be correct.

    reboot the VM.

    voila, done.

Thanks. That worked perfect for the vmware tools upgrade. Is there away I can get the hardware upgraded from version 4 to version 7 on Linux machines?

I was able to upgrade the hardware with Update Manager. I thought Update Manager didn't work with Linux. I guess for the hardware?

There is a VMware repository for tools. You may need to add yum to your RedHat servers to use it but you can then update tools using yum.
