    Hi Guys,

After watching the webcast about the upgrade to ESX4 using VUM i was curious as to the partitioning scheme the new COS takes.

Does it inherit the original scheme from the ESX 3.5 COS or does it create a new one?

    Cheers

It will use the existing partition layout, it's just installing RPMs to upgrade from 3.5 to 4.0.

    cheers mittell.

I was just trying to get my head around the COS moving to a vmdk and what that involved.

I had the same question. It seems to offer to store the data locally on VMFS, on a 'network' or on a shared VMFS. Are you saying these locations are used to store the RPMs required to perform the upgrade from 3.x -> 4?

There is a great video how to upgrade your ESX 3.5 host clusters using VUM with 4 phases of video on www.vmware.com site.

    1. vCenter server upgrade

    2. ESX hosts (cluster) upgrade

    3. Virtual machine /tools/hardware upgrades

    4. License activation and these phases are straight forward and easy.

Yeah, I watched the videos but the part about why 3 options exist for 'upgrade storage' were not entirely clear from the video.

I wish the video could be more clear on storage upgrade requirements or migration phases. I'm curious if it have new VMFS version instead of VMFS 3.x it would be VMFS 4.0 by chance?

    Hi Stefan,

There is no VMFS upgrades are required.

It was talked about on the VMTN communities podcast http://recordings.talkshoe.com/TC-19367/TS-215851.mp3

My original post was more to do with how it moved your current COS, and the partitions to the vmdk on the vmfs you choose.

    Ben,

As far as i could tell the reason for having the three options would be for COS on local storage, boot from SAN configurations and i think the third option was automatically choose.

    Hope this helps
