  • 1.  Upgrade ESXI host with vCenterServer on it

    Posted Mar 15, 2023 01:48 AM

    Hi
I want to upgrade my ESXI host to the last 7.0 version. But I have my vCenterServer VM running on it. How can I upgrade without getting any error on my database or in my VMs. It is correct to upgrade by ESXCLI Commands?

hi , im not sure which server and hardware u have. That i can suggest less.
i assume that u have 1 server and all vm on it.
    1. u need check ur new esxi ver compatible with ur VC
    2. ensure ur VC has backup(such as snap or clone is ok) then power off(of couse same to ur other VM)
    3. esxcli software vib install -d [https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/2008939?lang=en_US] then reboot
BTW, if ur host from 7.0 to last7.0, u can follow this.

    Hello.
The first thing is that you update the vcener server (VCSA) first and then the ESXi hosts.

If you have version 6.5 or 6.7 in the ESXi hosts, the VCSA ver 7.0 supports ESXi hosts with these versions.

If you do not need the history of the old VCSA, I suggest you shut it down and create a completely new one in version 7.0, then add the old ESXi hosts and from there plan how to upgrade the ESXi hosts. At the end after verifying that all is ok we can delete the old VCSA (to save space).

If for some reason the installation of the new VCSA fails, then delete this one and we are left with the old VCSA.

Remember that if you work with Data it is always recommended to backup the VMs, backup the ESXi hosts configuration and the VCSA.

    Thanks for your answer

    I have 2 esxi hosts.

ESXI 1 has version 7.0.1 and it has 12 VMs including vCenter Server with version 7.0.3.00100 running.

ESXI 2 has version 7.0.2, with 11 VMs.

All the VMs are compatible for the ESXI upgrade.

What would be the process that you will follow to upgrade both ESXI hosts to the last 7 version?

Which vSphere edition is in use?
Are the VMs stored on shared storage?
    Do you have vMotion licensed/configured?

    Thanks for your answer
    I have 2 esxi hosts.
ESXI Host are PowerEdge R640 - Compatibility with the upgrade
ESXI 1 has version 7.0.1 and it has 12 VMs including vCenter Server with version 7.0.3.00100 running.
ESXI 2 has version 7.0.2, with 11 VMs.
All the VMs are compatible for the ESXI upgrade.
    Lifecycle Manager - Yes
    vMotion - No license
    VM´s with shared storage
What would be the process that you will follow to upgrade both ESXI hosts to the last 7 version?
Is better with Lifecycle Manager or with ESXCLI commands?

i have no exp with Lifecycle Manager
U have no vMotion means u need poweroff VM when upgrade
u can just upgrade ESXi2 with VM poweroff, after upgraded, check with VC,poweron test VM for times,
Then snap VC and poweroff VMs on ESXi1,upgrade ESXi.

IF u can not poweroff for times, u also need restart VM on poweron host.
    upgrade must reboot host.
