Unable to ping from or to host

  • 1.  Unable to ping from or to host

    Posted Feb 22, 2012 03:06 PM

I am new to ESXi. I just installed Esxi 5.0. I was trying to connect to it using the client and I was getting a connection error message. I tried to ping the host and I get no reply. The host at this moment is getting a dynamic Ip from the router. I can ping the router from the host but I can't ping any other devices on the network or viceversa.

I have also setup the host using static IP and I get the same result.

    Any suggestions are greatly apreciated.

    Welcome to the Community...

Please post you ESXi host IP details and the IP details of machine from where you are trying to PING.

Are you testing ESXi under VMware Workstation??

The host IP gets a dynamic Ip from router:

    IP: 192.168.1.45

    Subnet: 255.255.255.0

    Gateway: 192.168.1.1

    Windows 7 workstation:

    IP: 192.168.1.79

    Subnet: 255.255.255.0

    Gateway: 192.168.1.1

I can't ping any other Ip's on the network from the host. However; I can ping the router from the host and I get a reply.

If I try to ping the host (192.168.1.45) from any workstation, I get no reply.

I really appreciate your help. Hope this infomration helps.

it's seems correct you network configuration. Please make sure that your guest network adapter is in bridge mode. If you are using DHCP server then try to renew the IP address. It's may help..

Sorry, I didn't completely answer your question.

No, the ESXi is on a stand alone server. No, other OS on that server. Hard drive was formatted during installation.

What's the router the Host is plugged into? and are the other machines plugged into the same router?

Have you checked that it's not blocking the host? tried another port on the router?

Depending on the location selected, Windows 7 I think blocks pings by default. Perhaps temporarily turn off any firewalls involved on the client (Win7, anti-virus programs, etc). I've torn out enough hair in my time over client firewalls blocking pings.

Otherwise, if everything's on the 192.168.1.xxx network, with /24's across the board (255.255.255.0), pings should go through. 99% of the time it's something silly like a firewall though.

Also try resetting the management network on the ESXi console. If something to hung up somewhere between settings IPs and I imagine changing ports a dozen times, sometimes that will help.

The router is a 4 port router and only three devices are connected to it. The host Pc and two laptops. I can move the cable to another port but I don't see how that can be the problem if I am able to ping the router.

I can give the host and computers a static IP and use a switch instead as a test.

Is there a firewall on the host that I can look into? By just looking at the menu, I didn't see anything.

However, I am a novice and don't know where to look.

Thank you again for your help. I will let you know after I try above suggestions. I won't be able to do anything until late today.

Are you able PING between those 2 laptops?

Yes. I can ping all the way around including the router.

I didn't try to ping the host from the router. I don't know if that router has the capability to ping local IP's. I will check.

This is so strange. I am a network professional but I have no experience in ESXi. I was wondering if this problem is related to a firewall on ESXi.

Did u already tried to restart the management agents as suggested by scottyyyc  and also try to reboot your ESXi host and give a try...

Yes, I have restarted the management agent and I have also setup the host using static IP. I have rebooted the host millions of times. I was so frustrated last night that I was about to remove 5 and install 4.1.

Yes, I have disabled the windows firewall on both computers. One laptop is Windows 7 and the other one Windows XP.

My only thought was a firewall on the ESXi that only allows communication between the two trusted IP's (router and host).

I will remove the router tonight, setup the host and workstation with static IP using a switch and post results.

Thank you everyone for your input. This is so upsettingggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg.

Are you able to get Succeed with this task??

I was unsuccesful last night with this project.

I tried using a switch with static IP's on all devices and still had the same issue.

I downloaded 4.1 and tried to install it but it crashes during installation.

I was unable to find an Intel NIC yesterday. I wanted to try a different NIC. Not that I think it will make a difference since the host is getting IP's from the router and is able to ping the router.

I still believe that somehow it is been blocked by some internal firewall (on the host) from anything outside these two IP's.

The host gets a dynamic IP from the router (i.e. 192.168.1.45) and I can ping the router (192.168.1.1).

If I give the host a static IP (i.e. 192.168.1.76), I can still ping the router (192.168.1.1).

    This is nuts. Going crazy.

Thank you for your follow up. I will install the Intel NIC this afternoon and let you know how it work out.

    Another question.

I was thinking on installing another network interface and disable the onboard interface.

How do I install the drivers for the new network interface? Or should I just do a new installation of ESXi with the new NIC installed on the system?

If you can ping the router from the Host but can't ping anything else it sounds like a default gateway issue on the Host.

Check to make sure that is correct.
