unable to install VMwareTools

I'm trying to install the vmware tools however the client cannot find them. How can I get a copy of them? I think that there must have been a hickup during the upgrade from 3.5 to 4.0. Does any have a suggestion? I've posted the error below. I have created a Windows 2008R2 VM and would like to upgrade VM drivers.

Message from esxi: Unable to install

VMware Tools. An error occurred while trying to

access image file

"/usr/lib/vmware/isoimages/windows.iso" needed

to install VMware Tools: No such file or directory.

If your product shipped with the VMware Tools

package, please reinstall VMware ESX, then try

again to install the VMware Tools package in your

virtual machine.

From the message, it says, its unable to find the windows.iso mounted file from tools.

Copy the Tools setup files from another VM.

1. Click install VMware tools from Menu.

2, Browse to CD, in that VM, and copy all files from that location...

3. Copy the files to problem VM, run the setup.

As you mentioned, IMHO maybe you issue is happening because a bad upgrade from esxi 3.5 to esxi 4.0 was done.

  I've recently completed two days of research for my issue and hopefully the excerpts from my post linked below can help you.
  While installing and reinstalling VMware tools my research came across the link and information below.  NOTE:  If after the install you are looking for the VMware GUI it is gone, but still available as a CLI.  See the answer to my post.

Apparently even if you uninstall VMware Tools the files still exist causing issues with the reinstallation.  You need to go into the file location and manually remove the folders.

So next step we performed was
1.Uninstalled VMware Tools from the VM
2.Rebooted the VM
3.Manually Deleted/Renamed the C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Tools
4.Manually Deleted/Renamed the C:\Programdata\VMware\VMware Tools
5.Rebooted
6.Installed the VMware Tools
7.Rebooted

The issue was not reproducible after the same

NOTE:  Make sure the VM's CD drive is pointing to the correct image.  I found it always going back to the windows 7 iso image on my physical machines C: drive instead of where the 2008r2 image was on the E: drive.

  I downloaded a fresh copy of the ISO files from here.  Be sure to locate your platform type.

Ssh to your ESX host and check if the file windows.iso is present in /usr/lib/vmware/isoimage

Example

~ # ls -ltrh /usr/lib/vmware/isoimages/windows.iso(there is one for Win version prior to Win 2000 as well)

-rwx------    1 root     root        70.8M Jan 14 11:24 /usr/lib/vmware/isoimages/windows.iso

This is what the VMware tools installer looks for, once this file is found  , it mounts the ISO in the Guest operating system(similar to installing an application from CD)

As a workaround, you can find the file from any other ESX host and scp over to this host.

Or

Migrate VM to another host that has the file already and install the VMware tools

But the fact that file is an indicator that upgrade was not smooth, they could be other inherent problems and best way is to re-install
