I have virtualisedan SBS 2003 machine in ESXI 4.1. There were problems with the physical adapter in the machine and I cant get that to work either. In the VM it reports it cannot load the drivers. I have tools installed but it did come up with an error saying it cant install the vmxnet drivers and install manually

    Welcome to the Communities.

The first thing I would do after a P2V is remove all the old hardware device drivers and the supporting software. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315539

I would remove the networking components in Windows and edit the Virtual machine settings and remove the virtual NIC and then add the e1000 adapter. Then restart the virtual machine.  You can then reinstall the VMware tools.

Tried that but still no luck. Has a yellow exclamation mark and says it was unable to load driver.

What type of virtual NIC are you using now?  You might try a reset of TCP/IP http://support.microsoft.com/kb/317518

Do u try uninstall and install the VMware tools one more time.

Please do not upgrade it, just uninstall and install it again.

You can try also to delete your vNIC and add a new one (vmxnet2 or vmxnet3).

    duncan,

    Try the following.

    • Remove all NICs from the VM
    • Uninstall VMTools
    • Clear the NIC registry settings at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\Tcpip\Parameters\Adapters\<GUID> and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\<GUID>
    • Uninstall any NIC driver software relating to the old physical hardware
    • Reboot your VM
    • Install VMTools
    • Add a new NIc (and configure)

    .

good luck - and feed back please
