  • 1.  Unable to increase memory for a VM above 4GB

    Posted Dec 12, 2016 01:54 PM

         Running ESXI 6.5.0.4564106.

I have one VM where I cannot increase the memory above 4GB. The VM is version 13. There are no memory reservations. When I try to increase the memory I get the message: The memory must be less than or equal to 4GB. I'd be grateful to hear any ideas to fix this. Other machines in the same ESXI environment have memory up to 8GB.

Which is the Guest OS (including edition and version)? And you're trying increase the memory while the virtual machine is powered on?

If the VM is a 64 bit OS, shutdown the VM and try again.

If the VM is a 32 bit OS, you will not be able to go over 4GB.

Also, verify that the VM has the correct OS profile in the VM configuration settings.

    You're right. It's 32-bit. Can't believe I didn't notice that. Thank you...

guest  OS :Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition or Windows Server 2003,Datacenter Edition 32bit  and so on ,because the PAE technology ( Physical Address Extension )

can support  over 4 GB below 64GB memory.
