    Hello,

I'm trying to get myself started learning about ESXi with some online training resources. I hope to do this on a Dell Poweredge R620, purchased from eBay which will turn up in a few days.

I believe there is a way of getting a free ESXi license, but I seem to be having a problem. I log in to vmware.com, and it keeps coming to an inactive account page. I have gone through the process of getting an activate account E-mail sent, and then clicking the link in the E-mail (many times), but it still keeps going to the inactive account page.

Can anyone tell me where I am going wrong, and yes, I know, I'm just trying to get a free license right now, so no-one at VMware is liable to want to help me, hence I'm here.

    Thanks!

    Paul.

P.S. if I have posted this to the wrong forum, please let me know where I should post it.

    Hello.
The fastest way would be to open another user with a different email, if you just want to get a free license.

    Hi Enrique,

Thanks for the advice - ESXi now running on the server, and starting to play with it

    Best Regards,

    Paul.

    Hey paul, how are you?
In addition to that, if you need to test something beyond your lab capabilities you can use VMware HOL labs https://labs.hol.vmware.com/HOL/catalogs/

    Hi,

Thats really good to know. At the moment, I have got the hypervisor installed on the box, but I want to properly set a hostname and static IP address for the box before I start loading up VM's. The UI for the networking is not as intuitive as I might like, so I think I just have to work my way through the docs and find what I need.

I stumbled across the advanced settings, and I have a quick question: Are they something that tends to be tweaked a lot, or do they default to the correct settings for 90% of users?

    Thanks!

    Paul.

You can configure that in the web GUI, but I usually configure these settings right after the installation from the ESXi host's DCUI (console). There's a menu item in which you can configure IP settings (address, subnet mask, and gateway) and another one in which you will enter the DNS server IP addresses and the host's fully qualified domain name.
