  • 1.  Traditional Netbackup vs SCSI Hot-Add mode VCB

    Posted Jul 15, 2010 09:36 PM

Our project just started implementing VMware. Our servers (R910) are running ESX 4, booting from SAN (esx and its VMs). We are evaluating which is a better backup solution for our environment. We been using Netbackup. I would like to know in terms of performance and usage load of ESX server (one hosts VCB vm) and local VMs of that server. We only consider Hot-Add mode.

FYI, our vCenter is also a VM

    Thank you

    Welcome to the forums.

There are many backup solutions that could suit the situation from free scripts to many $$$. Andrew created a nice document with links to many of the choices. Much will depend on what you have to backup, your budget, the number and types of guests and the applications you need to protect etc. Perhaps you can expand on your needs.

I'm not looking for other options, just those two. VMware guru, pls let me know which one will cause more load on the ESX server.

    thank you

Every situation is different. Different hardware, different software, different OS, different configuration, different load. The only real answer is "It depends". The best solution is test your setup in your environment and find the one that is most suitable.
