    Posted Aug 14, 2017 03:05 PM

I have an esxi server which I initiated a tools upgrade on a CentOS VM.

The tools install completed successfully on the VM, but I can't get it to stop/release on the esxi side.

From the console, im getting the error message:

Unable to connect to the MKS: Internal error

and it's not giving me a console and not releasing/stopping the tools install from the esxi side. This is preventing me from managing the VM properly.

Can you check if the VM summary page has IP and dns name, if yes, can you ssh to that VM?

What is the ESXi host version?

Yes, the VM has both IP and DNS names, and is alive and responsive.

I had already completed the installation of the tools and the summary page shows that the tools are running and current.

    ESXi is version 6.0.0.

Have you tried connecting via the ssh and check the status of the tools service?

    Yes, it's active and running.

My attempts to stop/unmount the tools installer failed. Even rebooting the VM did not clear the issue.

We found a resolution to this issue.

We rebooted the ESXi host and that seems to have cleared the issue.

Powering down VM would have cleared the problem, I had same issue where I even logged to case to avoid such problems in future but as usual VMware asked me to upgrade the ESXi hosts with latest patches.

In my case I powered down the VM and remove the CD/ choose the client device, Reboot did not work.

So did powering down VM was not working?

Specifically, I rebooted the VM, not powered down.

When the VM rebooted, the state was unchanged, I was still unable to remove the CD.

I will try just the power-down next time and see if that helps.

You can try unmounting CD or Killing VMware tools process inside the OS than try end VMware tools process.

in last you can shuddown the VM and remove VMware tools CD or choose the client device and power it on.

Ive already umounted the cd in the VM OS, but the "End vmware tools install" selection has no effect. The tools CD remains connected.

Even if I try to edit the settings it will not allow me to unmount the cd.

Power cycle is last resort and will need to be scheduled since this VM is critical for business operations.
