  • 1.  SUSE SLES guest console screen is black

I have SUSE SLES 12 running  on an ESXi 6.5 host.  I know the guest is running as it responds to ping requests and is serving web pages.  However I am not able to get into the console, and suspect the screen has powered down due to going to sleep, and will not wake up again.  I cannot just reboot the guest as there is an SAP system instillation in progress.  Any ideas how to wake it up so I can access the OS would be greatly appreciated.

The host is at an ISP so I cannot access it directly, and the other VM that is running on the same host is fine and I can access the console without issue.  I have tried the browser and remote consoles.

    Thanks for any assisance

When you say unable to access console, what is exactly happening when you try to access the console of that VM ?

    Explain more please .

If there is any error etc.. post it here .

There is no message, the screen is just black.  I choose "Launch remote console" and it opens.  It briefly has the VMWare logo and message "waiting for connection".  Then it connects and brings up the black screen.  Normally it should bring up the Linux desktop or the login screen if the desktop is locked.

I have read a post that it may have something to do with a screen resolution issue after accessing the console with a device that has low screen resolution.  http://bergdaniel.se/black-screen-of-death-in-vmware  I did access the console from my android phone two days ago.  The suggested resolution is to activate 3D graphics on the VM settings, but I can only do that after doing a shutdown, and to do that properly I need the console to shutdown the programs that are running.

Yes I know, I read multiple blogs which actually asks for a shutdown post which the steps would work, since you did not want to shutdown, it doesnt  make sense to give that.

What happens if you move this machine to any other host and try ?

Problem seems to have resolved itself.  Programs finished running so I rebooted and console is back.  Still do not know if it was the monitor that had powered down (gone to sleep) or an issue related to the screen resolution.
